Applying the principles of composition to typographic design

The history of human painting is accompanied by every stage of human survival. From casual painting to arrangement, there is a sense of composition. The position of Nan Xi’s painter Sheikh in the painting “Six Laws” refers to composition. The word “business” includes a series of thinking activities such as thinking, analysis, research, and scrutiny. "Location" also refers not only to the location of the arrangement of objects on the screen, but also to the structure of the entire screen. The painter Zhang Yanyuan of the Tang Dynasty said: “The location of the business and the general needs of the painting.” Visible composition is a very important technique. The five-generation painter Jing Hao and the Song Dynasty painter Fan Kuan took the “panoramic” composition; Ma Yuan and Xia Gui of the Southern Song Dynasty adopted the “corner style” composition, and thus had the reputation of “the silver corner of Phnom Penh”; the composition of Badashan people was mostly round Shape; Pan Tianshou is like a square composition. The composition of Chinese painting has two major features: first, it highlights the principle of the form of submission to the content; second, it reflects the dialectical laws of diversity and unity. With the efforts of generations of artists, composition learning is constantly evolving.

The above talks about the development of Chinese and foreign architectural studies. I will now talk about how to apply the principles of composition to layout design.

Symmetrical composition

Symmetrical composition has the advantages of being dignified and stable. The disadvantage is that if used improperly, it can give people a feeling of being rigid. The gates of Tian’anmen’s gates are symmetrical on the left and right sides, with one main entrance and two doors on both sides of the main entrance. If one side is on two sides, what will it feel like? There is a nave in the middle of a prominent family in China. The middle hall is lined with banners or couplets. If there is a side on one side, what is the feeling? Obviously it is undecided and unstable. The human body is symmetrical and balanced, but the models stand still and their limbs are not straightforward. Visible symmetrical design should be used properly. Such as: the formal solemn design of articles, festive newspapers and other similar couplet design using symmetrical design is more appropriate.

Balanced composition

Balanced composition is the most suitable and most commonly used, such as: design a newspaper photo layout in the lower right corner of a large picture, it is very heavy, then we should think of making a fuss on the left, this is not just a photo in the lower left corner Is it not a rigid symmetry? The lower left corner can be placed in the lower right corner, such as a horizontal picture, the lower left corner is best to put a vertical, smaller is better. In the middle, it is best to have photos echoed, in addition to the photos can be adjusted to the layout, there are column heads designed for the column (newspaper called the header), tail flower, headline and so on. Photos and illustrations can also be placed near the headline. In short, we must achieve a visual balance, not an absolute average.

Phnom Penh and Silver Corner

The landscape paintings of Ma Yuan and Xia Gui of the Southern Song Dynasty adopted the “corner style” composition to make the picture utterly ethereal and elegant. The use of corners in layout design is also very common. Whether it is opening a title or putting pictures, forms, design decoration lines, etc., it has the reputation of “Silver Phnom Penh Silver Corner”, so we must be careful in the design of corners. careless.

How to design the "Golden Phnom Penh Silver Corner"? This is inseparable from the application of point and line facets. There are no shortage of masters in the use of point and line faces in Chinese painting. We use these three factors in the layout design. You can think of a print head, a tail flower, and a LOGO as points; take a piece of ripple, a row of small letters, and a row of small flowers as a line; take photos, illustrations, or even a special piece of text as a face. Make interesting layouts and create beautiful layouts.

Frame design

Frame-like design is like a multi-dimensional grid, first put things behind the framework. Dobago has horizontal and vertical lines, narrow and wide, and even straight and straight, square and round. There is also a wide variety of things to put on. The layout of our design framework structure must also be as varied as Dobago to avoid rigidities. Unless there are special requirements.

"Calculate whiteness as black"

The blank of Chinese painting is not nothing but rich content.

The ancient poem reads: "I can only see fish without water, and there are also waves in it." This kind of expression technique was called by the ancients as "counting money as black", ie blankness is also an important part of the picture. When the ancients summed up the dense relationship between paintings, they also said: “The dredging can be carried away, and the secret is not airy.” The bold use of blanks by the ancients can be seen. Most newspapers and magazines are overcrowded, lack aesthetics, and even lack design. We must learn from the ancients.

Learning Chinese character structure

The Chinese characters have upper and lower structures, such as records; there are upper and lower structures, such as chapters; there are left and right structures, such as forests; there are left and right structures, such as 辙; there are small and large, as in; Large and small, such as A; there are small left and right, such as; with a small left and right, such as items; there is a side of the left and right structure of the word is also up and down or on the structure of the lower, such as love, ignorance; Somewhere there are left and right structures, there are various forms. All of these have provided reference materials for layout design. A magazine layout, double column is like the structure of the left and right words, the three columns are like the structure of the left and right words, why the word divided into three? Is there five or more lines? It is too chaotic. By the same token, too many magazine columns are not conducive to reading. By using the fonts of the A word, we can design a large or small cover or advertisement page with a big photo on it and some text below. Let's make a design with the structure of the 嶂 character as an example. The kanji character is the left and right structure word. Its right half is the upper and lower structure. We can imitate what the right side of the design main and subtitles of the right side is, and the right side emits a group of photos. Similarly, you can use the font structure to make many creative ideas. You can also learn from foreign languages and come up with good ideas. There are not many examples here.

The graphic design in Europe and the United States is already quite mature. Japan, which also uses square words, has its own set of theories. To follow a "and" character is to design a circle and harmony. At present, China does not have a unique design philosophy. I ventured to define it as "poetry." This poetry is not just: "Flying down three thousand feet, it is suspected that the Milky Way falls for nine days." "The solitary desert smoke is straight, and the long river ends in a round." "Two yellow cicadas Cuiliu, A line of egrets goes up to the sky.” These quantitative and tangible pursuits are more broadly poetic. Let us work together!
