Friday’s Industry Tips

Welcome back to our ongoing series, “Packaging For…” – a deep dive into how packaging solutions support different industries. While our previous posts have focused on art and picture protection, today we’re shifting the spotlight to the construction and decorating sector.

As you might expect, the building industry is often overlooked when it comes to packaging needs. After all, it's not a direct-to-consumer market like retail or e-commerce. However, the reality is that construction sites require robust, versatile, and reliable packaging solutions to handle everything from materials transport to site protection.

Building

Construction and decoration work involves heavy, bulky items that need to be moved safely, protected from weather, and sometimes even used as temporary coverings during the build process. That’s where the right packaging comes in – offering strength, durability, and flexibility for every stage of the job.

We’d love to hear from builders, decorators, and contractors about the challenges you face. What kind of packaging do you rely on most? Share your thoughts with us on Twitter or via email – your feedback helps shape the products we offer.

Key Packaging Needs in the Building Industry

The building industry is physically demanding, with tools and materials that are often heavy, messy, and difficult to manage. This means that packaging must be tough enough to withstand rough handling, harsh weather, and long-term use on-site. Here are some of the key requirements:

  • Strength – Materials like bricks, concrete, and tiles are heavy and need strong packaging to prevent damage during transport and storage.
  • Protection – Packaging is often used as a protective layer for surfaces, floors, and structures while work is ongoing, helping to keep areas clean and safe.
  • Clean Up – After a project is complete, there’s usually a lot of leftover material. Durable and recyclable packaging makes the cleanup process easier and more sustainable.

Packaging Solutions for the Building Industry

Centre-Folded Polythene

One of the most commonly used materials in the construction sector is polythene. Its waterproof properties make it ideal for protecting materials from rain, moisture, and dust. Whether it's covering furniture during painting or shielding new builds from wind and weather, polythene is a go-to solution.

Kite offers a range of centre-folded polythene rolls, including light, medium, and extra-heavy duty options. The extra-heavy duty version, known as 'builders polythene', is especially popular due to its thickness (250 microns) and high puncture resistance. It’s perfect for sliding materials across a yard, covering open spaces, or acting as a temporary weather barrier.

Wooden and Presswood Pallets

Wooden pallets have long been the standard for transporting heavy building materials. They're durable and can hold large loads, making them ideal for stacking bricks, timber, and other heavy items. However, many companies are now turning to presswood pallets, which are lighter, recyclable, and just as strong. These are particularly useful for smaller projects or when frequent movement is required.

Polypropylene Strapping

Strapping is an essential tool for securing goods on pallets. Unlike stretch wrap, which can be time-consuming to apply and remove, strapping provides a quick and secure method of holding materials in place. We recommend 0.9mm thick polypropylene strapping for heavy-duty applications, as it can withstand up to 300kg of force. The plastic reels are also more resistant to outdoor conditions than cardboard alternatives.

Vermiculite

Vermiculite is a newer product gaining popularity in both industrial and construction settings. It’s often used as a void filler in packaging, replacing polystyrene chips. But its benefits extend far beyond that. Vermiculite is absorbent, fire-resistant, and lightweight, making it ideal for packaging hazardous materials. In construction, it’s used to create lightweight concrete mixtures, reduce weight in plaster, and even improve soil quality in horticulture.

Whether you're working on a residential build, commercial project, or landscaping job, the right packaging can make a big difference. From polythene and pallets to strapping and vermiculite, the options are vast and tailored to meet the unique demands of the building and decorating industry.
