Introduction to Digital Printing Technology of Corrugated Box

Digital printing refers to the process of directly transferring digitized graphic information onto printed materials. As a significant advancement in the field of corrugated carton printing, it has emerged alongside the evolution of computerization and networked printing technologies. Unlike traditional methods that rely on intermediaries like films or plates, digital printing allows for direct transfer from a computer to paper or other substrates. One of its key advantages is the ability to modify content at any time before printing—so even two consecutive prints can be completely different in layout, content, size, and material. This flexibility makes digital printing ideal for on-demand, timely, and variable output. In terms of cost, digital printing machines typically require 40% to 50% less investment compared to traditional offset or flexographic printing. Additionally, the production cycle is shorter, the cost per page is lower, and the content can be customized as needed, giving it a clear competitive edge. Among various digital printing technologies, inkjet printing has seen the fastest growth. In 2003, Angel introduced CORjet, a digital printer specifically designed for corrugated paper and capable of printing on other materials as well. The key feature of CORjet is its digital liquid ink transmission system, which uses thousands of nozzles to eject extremely consistent droplets at an ultra-fast rate of 25,000 droplets per nozzle per second. It also employs water-based, environmentally friendly inks that offer excellent resistance to wear, water, and UV light. Although digital printing is considered a promising direction for on-demand printing, it still faces challenges in terms of speed and format when compared to large-scale industrial packaging. However, with the growing demand for short-run and customized printing, such as the increasing use of corrugated cardboard for exhibitions abroad, digital printing is expected to take a dominant role in this niche market. A notable example comes from the U.S. Menasha Display Group, which uses digital printing to produce exhibition displays. When producing only 1 to 500 units, traditional methods become inefficient and costly. With digital printing, there's no need for films, plates, or molds, allowing high-quality results at a more affordable price. The Sai Angel CORjet digital printing machine is capable of directly printing on corrugated cardboard, with the largest format measuring 63 inches by 102 inches. It supports six-color printing, including standard cyan, magenta, yellow, and black, along with light blue and light red for enhanced color options.
