Giant African rosewood flutters across the sea and settles in Nanyang Furniture Factory

On April 1st, the reporter met the so-called "big guy" mentioned by the master—a massive piece of Brazilian rosewood. This particular log is a round trunk measuring 1.8 meters in diameter, over 8 meters long, and weighing more than 25 tons. Though commonly referred to as Brazilian rosewood, it's not actually from Brazil. Its true scientific name is *Guyi Sumu*, and it primarily comes from Gabon and Cameroon in Africa. The wood features a distinctive circular pattern with a sort of "grin," which makes it resemble huanghuali, a highly prized Chinese hardwood. Because of its appearance, it was once widely known as "Brazil Pear," and for many years, people forgot its real name. This particular piece of African wood was imported by Nanyang Wyeth Redwood Industrial Co., Ltd. last year. Since the company began operations in early 2014, General Manager Wang Weihong has been thinking about how to make the company stand out. His goal was to turn the company into a leading manufacturer of mahogany furniture in the region. Having spent over a decade in Guangdong and building a network of contacts, he reached out to a foreign trade company and selected this rare redwood from Africa to create a batch of painting platforms and decorative pieces for the market. "This giant mahogany was imported from Gabon at a cost of 1.5 million yuan. It took more than six months to transport it across the ocean and through the light transport process, finally arriving at the end of last year. In the first half of this year, the market price skyrocketed—more than doubling. Now, it's valued at three to four million yuan," said Wang Weihong. He was still planning to produce paintings and other artworks using the wood, but now, he admits that finding another piece of such size is nearly impossible. After discussing with the factory team, he decided to keep it as "the treasure of the town factory." Today, this enormous log lies in the factory yard, still bearing its customs label. The label provides detailed information: the wood is called *Guyi Sumu* (Bahua), the tree is over 6,000 years old, and it originated from Gabon. It is described as hard, with a slightly staggered texture, fine and uniform structure, and a heavy weight. It is strong, resistant to drying shrinkage, water, corrosion, and termites. The volume is 22.299 cubic meters, and the weight is 25,580 kilograms.
