Let’s start with an example. On July 11, 2012, the Guangxi Jianlin Private Museum (referred to as "Jianlin Pavilion") filed a lawsuit against the Autonomous Region Museum in Nanning City's Qingxiu District Court. The reason was that when the museum displayed items from the Jianlin Pavilion, some pieces originally labeled as "Huanghua Pear" were changed to "Pearwood." During the trial, both sides had heated discussions, and the session lasted from 7 pm to 7 pm. The Jianlin Museum claimed that the Hainan "Huanghua Pear" collection was worth over 20 million yuan, while the price difference between "Huanghua Pear" and "rosewood" was about 20,000 yuan per ton.

The difference between yellow pear and rosewood is clearly reflected in their pricing. From this case, it's evident that the value gap between the two is significant. According to current market standards, mahogany quality can be divided into four categories: first class is rosewood and huanghuali; second class includes black rosewood and striped ebony; third class is red rosewood; and the fourth class includes rosewood and chicken wing wood.

According to China's National Standard for Redwood, the wood is categorized into "5 genera, 8 classes, and 33 species." Rosewood belongs to one of the 8 classes, specifically the "rosewood" category, which falls under one of the five genera. However, huanghuali wood is one of the 33 species, specifically *Dalbergia odorifera*, and it belongs to the fragrant wood genus within the 8 classes. Therefore, they are not on the same level and should not be considered the same.

Huanghuali wood has a beautiful texture, a soft and fragrant aroma, and its color changes significantly, ranging from light yellow to dark brown. It is hard, suitable for inlaying and carving, and offers excellent workability with moderate hardness and resistance to deformation. It is particularly ideal for making enamel and is considered a top material for classical red wood furniture. During the Ming and early Qing dynasties, Hainan huanghuali was highly respected in China.

Rosewood can be distinguished by the following four characteristics: 1) it has a unique fragrance, especially noticeable on the freshly cut surface; 2) it exhibits fluorescence—when rosewood shavings are placed in water, a green fluorescent substance may appear; 3) after drying, exposed rosewood often shows clear water marks; and 4) the grain is distinct and elegant.
