The first joint experiment of Sino-US "artificial sun" device was successful

From the Hefei Institute of Material Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, we learned that China ’s new-generation “artificial sun” experimental device EAST and the US General Atomic Energy Corporation Tokamak experimental device DIII-D have recently achieved the first joint experiment and achieved success. According to reports, the main purpose of this experiment is to use the off-axis heating and current driving capabilities of DIII-D to simulate the experimental conditions of EAST, to achieve a completely non-inductive current and high confinement plasma with high specific pressure and high bootstrap current share, and to use DIII-D D comprehensive and advanced physical diagnosis and analysis tools further deepen the understanding of related physical problems, and explore an advanced operating mode for EAST to achieve a fully stable plasma with high parameters.

It is one of the goals of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) to achieve high-performance steady-state operation of the Tokamak experimental device. EAST as a superconducting tokamak device, it is an important mission for ITER to preview the steady-state operation. The heating power of the next round of EAST experiments will be upgraded to more than 20 MW. How to use these powers to achieve a steady-state plasma with high parameters is a key issue currently facing.

Through this cooperation with General Atomic Energy Corporation of the United States, the researchers of the Institute of Plasma of the Chinese Academy of Sciences simulated the experimental conditions of EAST on DIII-D, and successfully achieved the equivalent rotational torque injection of EAST and the same current climb rate. Operating conditions, high bootstrap current share, ultra-wide current distribution and other conditions are completely non-inductive current high-performance plasma, thus verifying the feasibility of Tokamak high-performance steady-state operation completely relying on bootstrap current and non-inductive drive current.

China is one of the participating countries in the International Thermonuclear Fusion Experimental Reactor (ITER Project). EAST is the world's first fully superconducting nuclear fusion experimental device independently designed and manufactured by China. It passed the national acceptance in March 2007 and has achieved a series of experimental results in recent years. Its scientific goal is to lay a solid scientific and technical foundation for the ITER program and China's future independent design, construction and operation of nuclear fusion reactors.
