Is the furniture you buy "healthy"? The environmental rating logo tells you

In a recent development, the Shenzhen Municipal People's Committee for the Atmosphere revealed that the city has started implementing a furniture environmental protection rating system. This initiative allows professional institutions to assess and classify the environmental quality of factory-made furniture. As a result, consumers can now easily identify the eco-friendliness of the furniture they purchase. When buying new furniture, it's common to encounter some unpleasant odors. Today, people are becoming increasingly aware of the environmental impact of furniture, especially regarding harmful substances like formaldehyde. Many know that this chemical can be released from furniture and pose serious health risks. However, when selling products, some retailers tend to downplay or avoid discussing the issue of formaldehyde, which makes consumers concerned about the safety of their newly purchased items. According to Tan Qingliang, an official from the Shenzhen Office of the People’s Committee of the People's Republic of China, the China Quality Certification Center is working alongside local authorities to promote the furniture environmental protection rating system. Once fully implemented, consumers will be able to quickly assess the environmental standards of furniture before making a purchase. The system involves testing furniture through independent laboratories based on factors such as materials, production processes, and emitted odors. These tests determine the environmental protection grade, which is divided into five levels. Currently, more than ten companies in Shenzhen have already obtained certification, with many others in the process of applying. Wu Shangguang, director of the Development Department at the Shenzhen Branch of the China Quality Certification Center, explained that while the program is currently voluntary, it aims to encourage companies to take environmental responsibility seriously. In addition to product testing, the system also evaluates the company’s internal management, equipment, and technical capabilities to ensure consistency in product quality over time. This means that furniture manufacturers are motivated to improve the environmental performance of their products to achieve higher ratings. The initiative was first launched in Shenzhen, and if successful, it could serve as a model for nationwide implementation in the future. With growing awareness and demand for safer, greener products, this rating system represents a significant step forward in promoting healthier living environments for consumers.
