Development of technology to use waste wool and feathers

Koga Ichiro, a professor at Kyoto Women's University in Japan, used heat and compression to convert used wool and feathers into hard materials like plastics, which opened the way for the reuse of these wastes.

According to "Nikkoku Industry News" recently reported that wool and feathers contain a large number of keratin proteins, it has high moisture absorption and oil absorption, but not easy to heat conduction. Koga crushed them into 10 micron-sized powders, heated them at a temperature of 160 degrees Celsius, and applied a pressure of 1 ton/square centimeter within 5 minutes. The result was a solid material that was as hard as plastic, and the flexural strength and polyethylene were common. As large as plastic, up to 80 MPa. Prior to mixing various dyes in powders, solid materials of various colors can also be obtained.

The report said that this technology has basically reached the practical level, but its use has yet to be explored.
