Studio Cooke John, founded by Nina Cooke John, is a multidisciplinary design studio that sees placemaking as a powerful tool for transforming how people interact with the built environment. Operating at the scale of the human body—whether in the home or on the street—their work explores the everyday ways we use space, whether within the family unit or as part of a broader community.
Within the privacy of our homes, Studio Cooke John creates intimate spaces, but in public areas like streets and neighborhoods, they focus on building stronger connections with others. Their work fosters inclusivity and encourages dialogue among diverse communities, especially those who have been historically overlooked or marginalized.
Throughout their process, Studio Cooke John collaborates closely with clients and local communities to gather insights that shape their projects. Working alongside skilled craftsmen, fabricators, and consultants, they create spaces that are not only functional but also full of surprises and unexpected beauty.
Nina Cooke John’s work has appeared in publications such as The New York Times, Dwell, and PBS NewsHour Weekend, as well as in exhibitions like the Center for Architecture’s "Close to the Edge: The Birth of Hip-Hop Architecture."
Born in Jamaica, Nina grew up surrounded by creative problem-solving and resourcefulness. She brings this spirit of transformation and innovation into every project, from interior spaces to entire city blocks. Before starting Studio Cooke John, she worked on large-scale architectural projects and taught at prestigious institutions like Parsons and Columbia University.
Before founding Studio Cooke John, Nina co-founded Frame Design Lab after working with Reddymade Design for seven years. Her career has been marked by a deep commitment to education, design, and community engagement.
As an educator and architect, Nina continues to inspire through her teaching and practice. With licenses in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, she has shaped the field of architecture and design for over two decades.
