If you're searching for a creative and enjoyable method to introduce kids to math, there's nothing better than activities involving food. Whether it's counting candies or creating fraction-based pizzas, these hands-on approaches make learning math more engaging and fun. At home and in the classroom, we’ve been utilizing Numicon with my daughters, and it’s proven to be an excellent tool for developing a solid grasp of the number system. It’s versatile enough to tackle various mathematical challenges.
Recently, we tried our hand at making Numicon biscuits—a delightful twist on traditional baking that doubles as a math lesson. These biscuits not only taste great but also help reinforce concepts like number bonds and fractions.
To create Numicon biscuits, you’ll need the following ingredients:
- 170g unsalted butter
- 150g granulated sugar
- 1 egg
- 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
- 281g plain flour
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- Icing sugar
- Food coloring
- Chocolate drops for decoration
Start by mixing all the ingredients to form a smooth dough. Afterward, chill the dough in the refrigerator—overnight chilling works best if you’re preparing them ahead for school or other events. Once chilled, roll out the dough and use Numicon shapes as stencils to cut out corresponding pieces. Alternatively, you can use cookie cutters to create the holes if you prefer skipping the chocolate drops. Pop them into the oven until they turn golden brown.
While the biscuits cool, prepare the icing. Divide a generous amount of icing into separate bowls and add food coloring to each to create a vibrant spectrum of hues. Match the colors of the icing to the Numicon shapes for an added layer of fun. Once decorated, finish off the biscuits with chocolate drops, offering another opportunity to practice counting skills.
The final step? Enjoying the fruits of your labor! My girls loved pairing their biscuits to total ten, reinforcing their knowledge of number bonds in a playful way. Although the ones made at school lacked some of the aesthetic charm of those prepared at home, the learning experience was equally rewarding.
