Recently, the draft of the revised national standard for hazardous substances in wood furniture has been released. This new regulation aims to replace traditional non-destructive testing methods with a more advanced and accurate approach known as the "Climate Chamber Detection Method." Unlike the previous "Atmospheric Detection Method," this new technique allows for comprehensive testing without damaging the furniture. The updated standard also strengthens environmental protection requirements, particularly regarding the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are known to pose serious health risks.
One of the most significant changes is that furniture inspections will no longer involve breaking or damaging the product. Previously, destructive testing was common, which made it difficult for consumers to seek redress after discovering harmful substances. Now, with the new method, furniture can be tested in controlled climate chambers, maintaining a constant temperature of 23°C and humidity of 45%. This ensures that the test results accurately reflect the release of harmful materials, such as formaldehyde, from the entire piece of furniture.
Consumers have long criticized the old testing process, as it often resulted in damaged goods that could no longer be used. Many people gave up on seeking proper verification due to the high cost and inconvenience. For instance, one parent mentioned that they wanted to check if their child’s bed and desk were safe but found out that any test would destroy the furniture, making it unusable. Others relied on their sense of smell, which is not always reliable.
Industry insiders believe that the new regulations will bring positive changes. Mr. Hou, a furniture industry expert, stated that the new testing method will not only be more scientific and efficient but also push manufacturers to improve their environmental practices. It will help reduce fraud and make it easier for consumers to protect their rights. With the new system in place, furniture testing will become less invasive, more transparent, and more consumer-friendly, ultimately leading to better quality products on the market.
