Cavendish Mascot Challenge

Love a good challenge, especially when it involves a creative twist! Recently, Cavendish threw down the gauntlet by asking us to design a mascot for them using the money saved through their life insurance quotes. The idea immediately intrigued me, and I jumped at the chance to take it on.

Life insurance might not be the most thrilling topic, but sorting it out is definitely at the top of our family's to-do list. It’s crucial when you’ve got young ones depending on you. Cavendish made the process surprisingly straightforward, and we were pleasantly surprised to save around £10 simply by using the same information. That extra cash was the perfect starting point for our creative adventure!

With £10 in hand, I knew exactly what to do—buy some air-drying clay! A few months back, we tried working with regular clay, but the twins found it a bit challenging. Now that they’re almost five, I thought they’d be ready to tackle something a little more complex. We picked up a big bag of Das air-drying clay in terracotta and divided it into four portions. Each child received a piece and the mission was clear: create a new Cavendish mascot.

After some brainstorming, we decided that Cavendish sounded like the name of a cat. And so, the creative journey began!

The girls absolutely loved molding the clay, and the terracotta color turned out to be absolutely beautiful. Air-drying clay is fantastic for quick activities—it allows kids to let their imaginations run wild while creating anything they desire. Once they’re done, all you have to do is sit back and wait for it to dry naturally.

I always enjoy giving the girls challenges because it pushes them to work harder and produce their best work. Molly (age 7) had a very clear vision for her mascot. She envisioned a sophisticated cat wearing glasses. To her, it looked somewhat sphinx-like, which I thought was adorable.

One thing to note when working with clay is that attaching various parts can be tricky. My tip is to make little cuts on both surfaces before joining them—they seem to stick together much better that way. Molly added a lot of intricate details to her figure, even crafting tiny claws!

Charlotte (age 4), who adores play dough, took to this project like a duck to water. She crafted a sweet little cat with a charming face, complete with a nose and eyes made from small pieces of clay. Her enthusiasm was infectious, and she thoroughly enjoyed the process.

Rose (age 4) also found this task incredibly motivating. She often struggles with crafts and tends to give up easily, but this project seemed to boost her confidence. She was genuinely proud of her little cat and thought it was utterly adorable.

Once the mascots were complete, we arranged them in a mini art gallery for everyone to admire. Each piece was unique and reflected the individuality of its creator.
