The global flexible packaging market is experiencing a strong upward trend, with demand expected to grow at an accelerated pace. Developing countries are playing an increasingly significant role, as their share of the market continues to expand. China, one of the largest consumers of flexible packaging, saw its market consumption reach 6.07 million tons in 2015. This highlights the country's substantial role in shaping the industry.
Asia remains a major consumer region, accounting for nearly 40% of the world’s total flexible packaging demand. Between 2015 and 2020, soft packaging consumption in the region grew at an average annual rate of 6.6%. Notably, both India and China are seeing rapid growth, with India expected to grow at 9.4% annually and China at 6.9% during that period.
A large portion of the world’s flexible packaging—nearly 75%—is used for food packaging. Meat, fish, and poultry are among the most commonly packaged food items, followed by confectionery and baked goods. From 2010 to 2015, the consumption of flexible food packaging increased at an average annual rate of 4.0%, while beverage and pharmaceutical packaging also saw steady growth.
Driven by the demand for convenience and sustainability, flexible packaging has emerged as one of the fastest-growing segments in the packaging industry over the past decade. According to the Smithers Peel Institute, the global demand for flexible packaging reached $210 billion this year, with a total consumption of 26.2 million tons and a market value of $91.7 billion.
Looking ahead, the market is expected to continue growing. Over the next five years, flexible packaging demand is projected to rise to $248 billion at an average annual growth rate of 3%. Consumption is anticipated to increase to 31.7 million tons, with a 3.8% annual growth rate. Meanwhile, the market value is expected to climb to $114 billion, growing at an average annual rate of 4.4%. These projections underscore the continued importance and potential of flexible packaging in the global market.
