According to *Addiction Technology*, researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Boston Children’s Hospital have developed an innovative medical system that enables doctors to visualize a 3D model of a patient's heart before surgery, significantly improving the safety and precision of heart procedures. This groundbreaking system uses MRI scans to generate a detailed heart model in just three hours, a dramatic improvement over traditional methods.
Previously, creating a manual heart model required scanning the heart from over 200 different angles, which could take nearly 10 hours. To streamline this process, the research team developed a smart algorithm that reduces the number of scans needed. Instead of hundreds of images, the system only requires eight cross-sectional scans of the heart. Using these, the algorithm completes the rest of the work in about an hour, producing a highly accurate 3D printed heart model.
The entire process is not only faster but also more intelligent and user-friendly. While the technology is still in development, it has already shown great promise. A cardiac surgeon at Boston Children’s Hospital is planning to demonstrate the 3D printed heart model technology this fall, marking a major step forward in personalized surgical planning.
